Matthew 1:20 shows how God speaks to His servant at the right time. Joseph was deeply thinking about what to do after learning that Mary was pregnant. He did not act in anger or haste. Instead, he quietly considered the matter, showing his wisdom and righteousness.

While Joseph was thinking, God intervened. An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. This teaches us that when we sincerely seek to do what is right, God will guide us. God did not leave Joseph in confusion.

The angel addressed him as “Joseph, son of David.” This was very important. It reminded Joseph that he belonged to the family line of King David. God had promised David that a Savior would come from his descendants. By using this title, the angel showed Joseph that he was part of God’s long plan of salvation.

Calling Joseph “son of David” also explained how Jesus would be connected to David’s royal line. Although Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, He would legally belong to David’s family through Joseph. When Joseph accepted Mary and later named the child Jesus, he became Jesus’ legal father. In this way, God fulfilled the prophecy that the Messiah would come from David’s house.

The angel then said, “Do not fear to take Mary as your wife.” Joseph was afraid of shame, people’s opinions, and misunderstanding. God understands human fear, so He first removed Joseph’s fear before asking him to obey.

Finally, the angel revealed the truth: the child was conceived by the Holy Spirit. This showed that the birth of Jesus was God’s work, not human work. What looked like a problem was actually a divine miracle.
